What a milestone for our community memory! Yesterday, on Saturday, we completely finished clearing the eastern section of the historical cemetery on Kapushanska Street in Uzhhorod—stretching all the way from the church to Volodymyrska Street. This marked our 60th toloka overall (and the 18th one this year), meaning this single section alone took 15 dedicated clean-up sessions.
This area borders a highly popular walking path, and from now on, walking past it won't feel hidden or unsafe. We have transformed what was once a solid wall of dense thickets into a beautiful, transparent grove of mature trees, keeping only a very selective choice of young growth.
Closer to the McDonald’s side of this section, there is an old gate. It appears this was the original, pre-Soviet entrance to the cemetery. And right next to it, facing the new buildings, we uncovered a hidden "cemetery" of ancient tombstones... It looked as though it had been intentionally buried under piles of chopped trees, which we have now successfully cleared away.
We also took a walk through the sections we’ve cleared over the past year. Sure, at first glance, it might look like a wild jungle is trying to reclaim the space. But our reaction? Pffff, child's play! 🌱 It's absolutely nothing compared to the massive blackberry brambles, five layers of thick ivy suffocating the headstones, and the completely impassable walls of invasive brush that we originally hacked through. Maintaining the order from here on out will be so much easier.
